Misty afternoon

Well, it’s the end of the year, and the end of my photo-a-day project. I had fun, learned a lot about using my camera, and discovered that life has a way of getting in the way of projects like this. Lost a lot of time to Alki’s cancer treatments, and once I lost momentum it was hard to pick it up again. Still, it was a fun experiment.

I think I’ll end a year with this: one of my favorite wintertime scenes, the mist rolls in for the evening, shrouding the trees across the street.

Have a great new year!

Emigrant Lake – Fall 07

Here’s a picture I took this spring…

And here’s from the same area this weekend. Although we go every fall, this is the lowest I’ve ever seen the lake.

The water should be up to the base of those trees.

The low water revealed fascinating old pieces of driftwood. What do you see in this one?

This is one of three Scamps that was at the campground this weekend, in addition to about ten more we saw on the road. There must have been a Scamp party going on somewhere. We even saw a Scamp fifth wheel!
Here we are. Thanks to the Scamp we were not the smallest trailer at the campground.

Sunset through the branches.
The next day we walked as far as we could before rocks blocked our way. When we walked back past the info board we noticed the big sign warning that cougars had been seen in the area! We probably wouldn’t have wandered so far if I’d seen that sign first!
Canada geese
This is a vineyard up on the hill overlooking the park. It’s so beautiful, it always makes us wish we could stay there.
Storms blew in Saturday evenign
A heron picked along the beach
Clouds reflected in the Airstream.

Outstanding Sunset

Sunday evening gifted us with a sunset that really was unique, both in it’s gorgeous deep red colors, and the odd little dot-dot-dot of clouds which lit up half red, like little upside-down flame tips. Click on the picture to see the bigger, more spectacular version.

While taking the pictures a bat was doing laps around the house, and kept zipping by in front of me, but I couldn’t quite get a picture of him. There were mosquitos out there, so I’m entirely in favor of bats. I’ve had them swooping over my head while i was using my telesccpe, gobbling up the mosquitos who were targeting in on my body heat. Bats are our friends!

We went for a little hike today. This is a location we found while Geocaching a few years ago and it was so impressive, we thought about going back. Finally got around to it.

It was a sort of overcast day, which was nice because it wasn’t too hot. The hike was steady uphill to the top, though not really steep. We followed a logging road into DNR land north of Amboy, WA, up to the top of a ridge.

There were some pretty steep drop-offs! I wouldn’t want to be wandering around here at night!

Found some nice little purple wildflowers along the roadside.

This is our old Old OLD AND USELESS GPS unit. Although it eventually found enough satellites to triangulate and help us find the correct road to park the car on, it refused to be any help after that. Time for a new GPS unit. This one hasn’t been good for Geocaching for years anyway, since it’s precision is fairly low. It’ll get you within 10 yards or so of the cache, but after that you’re on your own! That was fine for the old ammobox caches, but not nearly precise enough for the micros people hide nowdays.

When we got to a clearing at the top we found ourselves looking over the edge of the ridge, and down onto Lake Merwin. Spectacular!

A huge vulture drifted by at eye level while we sat on the edge and ate our lunch.

Dave, playing around for the camera 🙂
Lake Merwin is HUGE! I always hear folks saying how it’s so crowded up there, but here we are on a Sunday afternoon and only a couple boats in sight. Looks like there’s room enough for everybody in the county on that lake. Then there’s Swift Reservoir right up the road.

Seems like ridge after ridge just went off into the distance forever.

Mt St Helens had a cloud cap on, preventing us from getting a good look at her. That will just give us a good reason to hike back up here.
