Tired dog

Barclay had a big day and went to get his annual shots. I have worked with him since he was a baby on bite inhibition, and body handling, but how do you prepare a dog from something that only happens once a year, like getting a thermometer shoved up your bottom and getting poked with a needle? I was worried he might nip someone in spite of all my work. Poor pup! He cried and whined and they had to call in an extra person to hold him down, but when it was all done he still just gave her a lick on the nose – what a good boy! When we came home he was pooped!

I know getting shots always takes it out of them for a bit. He was sacked out.

Mighty came along to cheer him up.

She gave him a few licks
These two have such a funny relationship. The cats have always encouraged Barclay to play rough with them, and they refuse to scratch him and put him in his place, even when he’s dragging them around the house wailing. But they aren’t scared of him, in fact they both will come and lick his face while he’s sleeping. So we try to protect the cats from him roughing them up too much, but obviously they are ok with it, because they could put a stop to it if they wanted to.

Alki update

Alki on the porch with Mighty (when she was at the vet hospital they had to shave spots on both her front legs for the IV – so she looks like she’s wearing furry boots until the hair grows back)
Alki is hanging in there. Everyone is over their doggie colds, though Alki still gets a bit of a cough now and then. She’s definitely feeling better, and is even downright perky sometimes. I thought for sure her time was about up, but she’s like the energizer bunny, she just keeps going…

Cats

 Mouse and Mighty.
Even though they are sisters and we bought them to keep each other company, they have decided they HATE each other. Just the other night I let Mouse in, then called Mighty and as she ran up on the deck Mouse ran back outside and tried to run her off! They get in scuffles all the time, which Barclay loves to break up. I don’t know why I happened to get a picture of them standing this close, I’m guessing there was about to be a fight, but since the dogs and I came outside they decided to take it up again later.
After Mouse disappeared I got some nice shots of Mighty:

All the critters

Big Red and her chicks are mixing in just fine with the rest of the flock (that’s her and her chicks in the back center). I even saw her biggest rooster chick picking a fight with Copper, the baby cochin roo who’s easily three times his size. They fluffed up and jumped in the air and everything!

The cats are never far away when I’m doing chores. Mighty hopped up on the post to see what was going on.

Barclay and Jack had a crazy wrestling match on the sofa.

Hey stop, that tickles!

Poor Alki is quite old, has cancer, potty issues, is mostly blind and deaf. She mostly naps, and eats cookies…

Did someone say cookies?

(Bounds towards the kitchen) I’m getting a cookie, right?

Turkey’s, llamas, and kitties, oh my!

The turkeys survived their first day. Last night when I went to check on them before bed one was laying on it’s side and didn’t look good at all! I picked it up and saw it’s butt was ‘pasted up’ with dried poo. So I tucked it under my shirt and took it inside and washed the poop off with a warm wet tissue, then took it back out to the brooder. I didn’t think it would make it, but sure enough this morning everyone was walking around eating and drinking, and I couldn’t even tell which one was so miserable last night.

Today was the 4H llama area show, and afterwards I invited our club leader to bring the club llamas and drop them off in our pasture for a few weeks. We have lots of grass for them to eat, and her pasture is getting a little tired after being grazed all winter. So now we have six llamas, well four llamas and two alpacas actually. Jack went nuts when he saw them, baying and barking LOUD and non-stop like we’d been invaded! Barclay wanted to go play with them, but I wouldn’t let him. He doesn’t know not all llamas want to play with him like Houdini did, these llamas might just trample him!

Lastly, Mighty took a moment to pose for me in front of the spring flowers, and the orange sunset light seemed to make her glow! Pretty Kitty!

Got to go easy on Jack

Mighty, Barclay, and Jack in the backyard

I took the boys for what I thought was an easy walk at the park yesterday, but after we got home Jack was miserable and uncomfortable, and just laid on the floor quivering for a while. He recovered and was normal this morning, though a bit subdued. He still wanted to play tug with Barclay out in the yard, and now they are all crashed for a nap. I was really worried about him last night. I think maybe he just got a bit too much of a workout. I forget that he does have a lot of weight to work off, and since he plays so hard with Barclay, he seems like he’s in good shape. So today I’m going to just let him rest and next week we’ll visit the vet for a checkup.
