So many changes…

Ok, first some good news. I got a new job! No more hour-and-a-half commute downtown, now I have a job a mere 45 minutes away (not bad considering where we live) in my own state – so no more paying taxes in that other state. Plus I got a raise, plus they have fully-company-paid medical and dental. I think I hit the jackpot! Next week is my last week at the old job, and then I start off on a new adventure, doing the same thing, Software QA Testing, but a whole lot closer to home!

The next big thing is going to be selling our house and moving closer into town – cutting that 45 minute commute down even more. Frankly we just can’t keep up with this property by ourselves. And it’s expensive to try. I don’t have much time at home, and I don’t want to spend it mowing. I’d rather be out bicycling or paddling or working on my car. We’re looking at houses in a modest neighborhood that is so close to work I could walk or ride my bike to work, and central to the other things we do, and to our friends who live in town.

Today we had to rent this monstrosity to catch up on the overgrown back and side yards.

Poor Dave worked his butt off to get the yards looking that good. Still pretty shaggy, but better. Next the weedwhacker will come out to do the edges.

We’ve also been cleaning and de-cluttering the house. As we get a room looking good I take pictures of it.

I’m really happy with how they are coming out. I think our house looks pretty good! Keeping it clean and uncluttered is going to be a challenge for us, because we’re ‘pile-ers’ and we tend to accumulate stuff, but I think we can do it!

We had a friend who does house-cleaning come in and clean for us. We have carpet cleaners coming in on Monday. We’re going to have to spend a little money on having some pros come in and help get some stuff taken care of that we can’t do ourselves.

I’ll miss our place in the country, but I’m really looking forward to simplifying our lives, so we can concentrate on the things that we really enjoy.

Where I Live vs Where I Work

The other day we were doing a petsitting job at a client who lives on the hill behind us, way up at the top, with a beautiful view of the countryside. I looked through my binoculars and realized just how far their view extends from way up there.

Zooming in, I can see the transmission towers in Portland. And even closer…

That’s Portland! It’s down in a river valley, so it’s just peeping above the ridges. I wish there had been better contrast, but you can just make out the skyscrapers, and the Fremont Bridge. I go over the Fremont every day during my commute, so I know how tall it is, but in case you don’t…

It’s HUGE! It’s very tall, and a double decker. And just think, from that hill, 25 miles away, it is just a little splash of color down in the valley.

So that’s the difference between where I live, way up in the country, and the city, far far away.

Android Programming

Today, everything came together, just the way I wanted it to!

I took the day off work so we could leave early for camping this weekend, but Dave found a temporary job and had to work today, and we really didn’t have the money to spend on a trip, so we cancelled the camping trip – but I didn’t cancel MY vacation day! Instead I got up early, intent on working towards my latest goal – learning to write android apps.

I have been wanting to do this for some time, but at first we didn’t have ANY Android devices. At Christmas time we got Dave a nice Android phone, which actually saved us money because he can use it to charge credit cards for the toy business using Square, and was able to close our Merchant Account with the bank (which cost us money if we used it or not!) At the same time I got my Kindle Fire, which has made life so much more bearable with the long bus rides to work, plus I use it all day to listen to podcasts while I’m working, and drown out the noise of the people in the cubicles around me. So we actually have two Android devices I can work with now.

My first thought this morning was, it would be really handy to have a second monitor – one to program on, and one to have documentation open on and look stuff up. I’m spoiled by having two monitors at work! I told Dave it sure would be nice to add a small flatscreen to my system, and he said ‘why don’t you use the extra monitor?’ – EXTRA MONITOR?!! I had completely forgotten we had an extra left over from when we closed the store! I whipped up a way to mount it on my desk next to my laptop, plugged it in, and it worked like a charm! The laptop was made to have a second monitor – no problem!

I couldn’t have had it work any better! So while Dave was away working, I was playing with my Kindle. Here it is, my laptop and the bigger second monitor, and on the left, my Kindle, hooked up to the laptop and running a program I WROTE! What a kick in the pants! 🙂 I used to love programming, but there’s nothing like doing something for a living to take all the joy out of it. I could see this being fun again!

Good news, and a new lens!

I got good news on Friday! My boss said they’re going to hire me on permanently before the month is out Smile This is awesome news, because I really like the place I’m working at, I like my co-workers, and I’ve been working my fanny off to absorb every bit of info they’ve thrown at me, hoping to prove myself worthy to step up from being a temp. I had a feeling I was a shoe-in all along, but it’s good to know it’s for sure now! I’m still getting used to having so much less time at home, but Dave is keeping after the household chores so I don’t have to, so that makes it all easier.

I do feel a bit like I’ve traded work for just about everything else I enjoy, so I decided to reward myself with a little treat. I felt there was a gap in my lens kit for my Nikon D50 DSLR. I have a nice Nikkor 28-80mm f3.3-3.5, which takes very sharp pictures in the ‘kit lens’ range. I have my Tamron 18-200mm 3.5-6.3 zoom which is a nice all around zoom. Not as sharp as the ‘kit’ lens, but very nice and it has a nice reach. But I wanted one more lens for portraits, one that would work well in low light, and one that would have a wide aperture to get that lovely blurry background that makes the subject pop out. After much research I chose the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 – and I have been watching them come and go on Craigslist for months. This morning I went and met a guy who had one for sale and handed over the cash.

I was not disappointed.

This was before I discovered I had a setting on my camera that had it stopped down two steps in Aperture Priority mode. Still, the sharpness is there.

I love the whispy hair and the detail around the eyes in this shot. It looks much better to get the nose at an angle in line with the eyes, compared to the next shot!

Because the focal depth is so shallow, I have to be careful to control where the camera focuses – or I’ll just get a sharp nose! (Which is kind of cute, in it’s own way…)

The eyes have it…

Not having a zoom takes a little getting used to – I had to get right in the animals’ faces to get the shot framed. Navi wasn’t willing to stand still for it – she hardly ever stands still anyway! Cats are good subjects for this though!

I’m pretty blown away by the quality of shots I’m getting from this lens. It just goes to show, even with an older DSLR, lenses make all the difference. I think I’m going to be happy with this setup for quite a while.

One other thing, the guy who sold me the lens was really nice and recommended a photography book he thought was really good, The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby. I checked out the reviews and saw it was only $9 for the electronic format, and bought it. It’s full of good tips and tricks for getting the most out of your DSLR! Hey, for $9 – if it helps me get a few photos here and there I might have otherwise missed, it’s totally worth it.
